Abstract

Targeting Violent Crimes and Gangs Through a Data-Driven Approach.

Through grants from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Justice & Security Strategies, Inc. works closely with the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office Gang and Gun Unit to reduce gang violence throughout the county.

As the Research Partner, JSS supports members of the Gang and Gun Unit (Miami-Dade Police, City of Miami Police, Hialeah, HIDTA, and other agencies) by providing information, data, and analysis in a timely, accurate, and visually compelling manner.

The idea of intelligence-led policing is the backbone for the Gang and Gun Unit, as it involves a collaborative approach that is based on improved intelligence operations and community-oriented policing and problem solving. Intelligence is used for decision making, planning, strategic thinking, and crime prevention. These methods apply directly to fighting gang-related crime. As part of intelligence-led policing, the State Attorney’s Office and JSS have developed and implemented Gang Statistics (GangStat), that makes use of computer-generated mapping, data analysis, gang trends, problem solving, and intelligence sharing. Using Gangstat, the Gang and Gun Unit works with local police agencies to systematically problem solve and use intelligence in a fashion that leads to more efficient and organized crime cases.
